We have taken an in depth look at six of the seven elements of art; line, shape, space, form, value and color, now we will explore the element of texture. Texture refers to the quality of a surface. Everything that has a surface has texture, whether it's rough, soft, bumpy, prickly, glassy or whatever. Even smooth describes a texture.
In art there are two different types of texture, actual and implied. Actual meaning three dimensional, as in a sculpture or a bas-relief. Implied is a two dimensional illusion of texture, like a realistic painting of a furry animal.
We will begin by exploring actual texture using clay and then we will make a collage from visual textures that we find in photographs from magazines. We will also discuss and explore the relationship between texture and pattern.
