The Elements of Art (continued)

SPACE - Space in a work of art consists of two areas within the picture plane: the area around the primary objects - known as the negative space; and the space occupied by the primary objects - known as positive space. The main focus of this weeks lessons will be on getting the students to see the negative space and understand how it impacts a composition.

A Pile of Chairs - Positive / Negative Space Exercise

ART Project for the last week of September

You will be drawing from life, just like you did last week only this time you will be focusing on the "negative space". You want the chairs to fill up the paper. The rule of thumb is that they must be touching at least two edges of your paper. Once you've completed drawing the outlines you are to fill in the negative space, leaving the positive space white. (Use the view finder to help you decide on a good composition)
