BALANCE - Alexander Calder

This week we will focus on the principle of BALANCE. The concept of balance in art relates to our physical sense of equilibrium so it is perhaps easier to understand how it applies to a three dimensional object (like a sculpture or a mobile) than a two dimensional painting. When working with balance the artist must reconcile opposing forces in a composition. When applying this process to a painting, the artist must use their imagination, whereas with a sculpture, balance can be physically tested. If a sculpture isn't properly balanced it will fall over.

This week in class we will study Calder's work and construct mobiles.
